A Birdwatchers Honeymoon Trip Report

1st July - Full Day
Susan & Rob Nagtegaal (Holland), Catarina Fagundes and Tânia Pestana (Madeira Wind Birds)

Paul da Serra - 2 Goldfinches, 1 female Blackcap, some Berthelot's Pipits, some Plain and Pallid Swifts, heard the a Firecrest and some quails and seen 1 rabbit.

Ribeira da Janela - 1 Kestrel, some Canaries and Black Birds, more than 20 Common Terns (many of them juveniles), some Yellow-legged Gulls with 1 juvenile, 1 Whimbrel, 1 Little Egret, 2 Grey Wagtail, 3 Mallards and some Domestic Ducks

Porto Moniz - 1 Zino's Petrel / Fea's Petrel and many Cory's Shearwater flying on the sea, some Yellow-legged Gulls, some Rock Pigeons and Canaries.

Ponta do Pargo - 4 Buzzards, many Kestrels, 1 Chaffinch, at least 4 juveniles of Spectacled Warblers and 3 Berthelot's Pipits.

Ponta do Sol - 2 Little Egret, 4 Moorhens, 3 Coots, many Domestic Ducks, many Common Terns, 1 Roseate Tern, few Yellow-legged Gulls, 1 Grey Wagtail, 3 Rock Pigeons and 2 Canaries.

29th June - Night Expedition

The night was quite clear, there was no wind and we could hear very well the calls of Zino's Petrels. 1 Silhouette was seen.

On Caniçal – 2 Common Mynas, many Atlantic Canaries, some Berthelot's Pipit, 1 Kestrel

On the way to Desertas - Cory's shearwaters, Fea's Petrels, Bulwer's Petrels

On Desertas – heard and saw many Cory's Shearwaters and Bulwer's Petrels

27th
Desertas – 1 Buzzard, Common Terns, some Canaries

On the way to Porto Santo - Yellow-legged Gulls, Cory's Shearwaters, 1 Great Shearwater, Fea's/Zino's Petrels, many Bottlenosed Dolphins and a Turtle

28th
In Porto Santo – some Berthelot's Pipits, 2 Hoopoes, some Rock sparrows, 2 Spanish sparrows, 1 White stork flying, 2 Buzzards, Kestrels, Yellow-legged Gulls, Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Common Terns, Swifts and some Rabbits

On the way to Madeira – some Common Terns, Gulls, Cory's Shearwaters, 1 Little Shearwater, Bulwer's petrels, Manx Shearwaters and a Flying Fish

Notes: As the couple had already seen the Firecrest and the Long-toed Pigeon, on the full-day Madeira Wind Birds concentrated it's efforts in other species. On the place they had stay, recommended by Madeira Wind Birds, they could observe some species from their balcony as: Sparrowhawk, Robin, Chaffinch, Firecrest and 2 Grey Herons.
