Jérôme Fournier and Andrea Panizza Bird Trip report

Jérôme and Andrea from France have kindly sent their bird observations while on a family holiday in Madeira, from November 24th to December 1st.

1 Mallard Anas platyrhynchos 1 pair at Ribeira da Janela (Nov. 29th), in the mouth of the river
with Domestic ducks and goose (wild origin doubtful?) - Wind Birds reply: the Mallards, Muscovy ducks and the Goose at Ribeira da Janela are domestic
2 Teal Anas crecca 1 ind. At Ribeira da Janela (Nov. 29th) with the pair of Mallard and others
ducks and goose - Wind Birds reply: the teal is the Green-wing Teal that is now in eclipse and was the 1st record for Madeira
3 Little Egret Egretta garzetta 1 or 2 ind. in several localities such as Porto Moniz, Caniçal,
Machico (3 ind.), Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, etc
4 Grey Heron Ardea cinerea 1 ind. in flight northward over the road to Fajã da Nogueira (Nov.
27th)
5 Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax 1 juvenile/1st year at Lugar de Baixo (Ribeira brava) (Nov.
28th)
6 Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus 1 ind. in the Santa Catarina Park (Funchal), 1 ind. at Ribeiro Frio
(Nov. 27th)
7 Common Buzzard Buteo buteo species seen everywhere and everyday in the moutain, 1 pair in
flight over the road to Fajã da Nogueira (Nov. 27th)
8 Kestrel Falco tinnuculus very common species, 4 inds. in the same time at Madalena do Mar
(Nov. 28th)
9 Coot Fulica atra several ind. in the lagoon of Lugar de Baixo (Nov. 28th)
10 Turnstone Arenaria interpres several individuals in some places such as Funchal, Santa Cruz
(13), Machico (4), Caniçal (8), Porto da Cruz (3)
11 Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus 5 ind. seen at Ponte de São Lourenço (Nov. 25th)
12 Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus in the harbour of Funchal (6), Machico (5) and
Câmara de Lobos (2)
13 Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus only seen in the harbour of Funchal (abundant)
14 Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis common species
15 Roseate Tern Sterna dougalli 2 ind. in the harbour of Funchal (Nov. 24th)
16 Common Tern Sterna hirundo several inds. in the harbour of Funchal, Caniçal
17 Feral Pigeon Columbia livia
18 Trocaz Pigeon Columba trocaz found in several places in the moutain. 9 ind. along the road of
Fajã da Nogueira, 3 ind. close to Ribeiro Frio, 2 ind. close to the village of São Roque do Faial, 2
ind. along the E.R. 202 to Santo Antônio da Serra, 1 ind. along the E.R. 209 close to the little lake,
2 ind. close to Curral das Freiras
19 Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur 1 ind. seen at Caniço (Nov. 25th)
20 Barn Owl Tyto alba 1 ind. seen at Camacha (Nov. 30th)
21 Plain Swift Apus unicolor very abundant, seen everywhere
22 Berthelot's Pipit Anthus berthelotii 3 ind. at Ponte de São Lourenço, 1 ind. heard in the Pico
do Ariero
23 Grey Wagtail Motacilla cinerea seen everywhere one at a time, but also in the forest
24 Robin Erithacus rubecula seen one at a time at Ribeiro do Frio, Jardim Botânico of Funchal,
Santana, Ponta do Pargo, Prazeres, Santo Antônio da Serra
25 Blackbird Turdus merula seen everywhere
26 Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla very abundant, seen everywhere
27 Spectacled Warbler Sylvia conspicillata 2 inds. seen at Ponta do Garajau, 1 ind. at Caniçal
28 Madeiran Firecrest Regulus madeirensis seen everywhere in the forest of the moutain, also in
the Jardim Botânico and the Santa Catarina Park of Funchal
29 Spannish Sparrow Passer hispaniolensis a little population in the palms and trees in the entry of the wharf of the port of Caniçal
30 Rock Sparrow Petronia petronia in an mixed group of at least 60 individuals at Ponte de São
Lourenço with Canaries
31 Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs found everywhere
32 Linnet Carduelis cannabina in an mixed group of 80 individuals with Goldfinches and Canaries
close to the lighthouse of Ponta do Pargo (Nov. 28th) but also in other places (Prazeres, Santo
Antônio da Serra)
33 Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis at Ponta do Pargo, but also in the Santa Catarina Park, Jardim
Botânico of Funchal and several other localities (Faial, Santana, etc)
34 Canary Serinus canaria found everywhere
35 Common Waxbill Estrilda astrild 3 ind. seen in the reed beds of the lagoon of Lugar de Baixo
